Pilot project combines apprenticeship training, Indigenous teachings for Sudbury youth

Aug 4, 2021 | CURRENT PROJECTS, CURRENT PROJECTS (CP)

Miskwaawaak (Red Cedar) is a pilot project which seeks to explore the experiential learning opportunities available through hands on projects that benefit youth participants and also make an improvement to the community. The project will see the build of a traditional arbor on the sacred land of the N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre, followed by a multi-day workshop abounding with traditional teachings and ceremony. Youth participants will work alongside elders and community members to learn about apprenticeship opportunities and pathways to employment and education as well as traditional Anishinaabe teachings and ceremonies. The pilot seeks to explore how educational projects can be mutually beneficial for learners and the community at large. The project is a collaboration between Future North, The Local 2486 Carpenters Union and The N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre through their Youth Cultural Camp Fund and the Apatisiwin Program.

Purpose: Miskwaawaak is an alternative education pilot project that seeks to leverage existing collaborations between community partners to test the accessibility, success rate and potential challenges within a time limited, small scale mentor project.
