Hello!
Let me briefly, and virtually introduce myself! My name is Alex Cardinal and I have worked with the Carpenters Union Local 2486 for the last three years as the Apprentice and Training Coordinator. My role with the Local is to help register apprentices, support them throughout their apprenticeship and guide all of your new applicants through the process of becoming our members. I also manage the training requests and scheduling. Local 2486 offers a number of apprenticeships in the Carpentry, Drywall and Flooring trades. With all of the brand new projects and maintenance projects the field is seeing a major shortage in skilled trades workers. Over the next few years, the field will be short up to 400 individuals. We welcome all applicants, regardless of their experience.
How to apply
To become an applicant with Local 2486 there are a few steps to take. The first step would be reaching out to our office ( the contact information below) to be able to be scheduled for an interview. Throughout the interview, an applicant would be explained the wage schedule, the possible work opportunities, discuss what the Local’s goals are as well as the objectives. Interviewers will also describe the mandatory safety training required to work through the Carpenter’s Union such as Working at Heights, WHMIS 2015, Workers Health and Safety in Four Steps and Confined Space Awareness. We will also help guide you where to find this training and possible opportunities to obtain this training through the Local!

Step 1:
Once you have arrived on the website, you may select the green button that says “Add to cart” and the language you wish to take the course in (French or English).
Step 2:
You will be prompted to create an account, you can do so by clicking “create your shopping account”. You will then be prompted to fill out your information. After you have completed that section, you should be able to see this screen, which you will then select, “Create a new training account” and “I am the new learner”.
Step 3:
You will then be asked to confirm your details. Afterwards you will be taken to this payment screen. You can fill out your payment information, which will provide you with the course details, that can be found on your account or through your email.
WHMIS 2015 certificate:

Step 1:
This link will take you directly to the WHMIS 2015 certification test. You may take the test, afterwards you will be awarded a certificate if you successfully complete the test. Please keep a record of your certificate by saving it to your computer or by taking a screenshot.
Workers Health and Safety in Four Steps certificate:

Step 1:
Once arrived on the website, you can start the certification process by clicking on the “play” button, highlighted in red. This will begin your training. You will receive a “Proof of Completion” certificate once you complete the training. You must save and/or print the certificate before exiting the module. The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development will not store your certificate, or keep a record of training. Please keep a copy for your records.
Confined Space Awareness training:

Step 1:
When you arrive on the Canada Safety website, you may select the green button, “add to cart” to purchase the course.
Step 2:
Once you have added the course in your cart, you will be asked to register for an account. You may go ahead and select “Register for an account” and put in your information.
Step 3:
After creating your account, you will be asked to fill out your payment method and confirm your profile information. You will then be emailed your course details.
Valid Ontario Drivers License:

Price: $158.25 +
If you are at least 16 years old, you can apply for a driver’s licence in Ontario. As a new driver, you will need to practice driving and gain experience over time. For most people, the process takes about 20 months to finish. You will have to complete your G1 road sign and knowledge test first. Your G1 will cost $158.25. The fee for your test will cover the written exam as well as your drive test to get a G2 license, though you have to pay an extra $15.75 if you need to retake the knowledge test. You must also pass a vision test. After you pass these tests, you will enter Level One and get a Class G1 licence. You must pass two road tests to become fully licensed (G2, G).

You may take your G2 test 8 months after your G1, if you complete the driving school requirements. Prices range from $600+.
